My roommate, sister and a good friend all have 12" powerbooks. I've called my sister and friend to let them know. I was home over lunch when this news broke and so I pulled the battery out of my roommates powerbook and it falls withing the SN range being recalled. This, for him, is actually a GOOD thing. His Powerbook battery is at 52% after only one year of ownership and 177 load cycles. Now it looks like he'll be getting a free battery from Apple. He never had a problem with it but free is free.

And hopefully updated MBP's with C2D.
"hopefully"! im about ready to gouge my freaking eyes out from waiting. First it was wait for WWDC, then the next Tuesday, then the next, then the next...it just goes on forever! Not to mention all the stuff that is said on here. yes, i said it. this place is a place for Mac maniacs go to bonkers with rumor this and rumor that. And quite frankly...i love it!:p

Blow through your data cap with 650MB downloads for every point update? Not happening until Apple can deliver smaller downloads for updates.
If I have to wait for the carriers to approve this functionality because of bandwidth concerns, then it better not count against my usage.

Oh dang, these firmware updates make me nervous... so im going to wait and let others be the guinea pig.
No way I'm going to do this update. This will not benefit me in any way whatsoever. At most, it'll ignore any "true" problem and not shut down when necessary. I won't install this update for like 6 months to see if this happens to others. Why should I install it when I don't even have this RSS issue, right? It'll just create a safety hole in my system.
After applying the update, it seems like it's running cooler. I'm getting 53-54C now, when normally it's 58-59.
Ah yes, let these types of posts begin. ;)

On a side note, is this the same battery they're recalling (and still selling)?

hahaha, that'd be a bit of an oversight. i wonder if the new batteries are being specially made for the recall...

Got to Oakland Radio Shack 15 minutes after opening. They had just sold out and I was #1 on the waiting list. At least they said they would call me as soon as the model I wanted was back in stock and would hold it for me.

My lovely girlfriend. Any C&C would be greatly appreciated!
Great background, which makes her stand out very well with her dark hair, and the shadow on her left arm. Not quite enough contrast between her right shoulder and the background (maybe dark sleeves would help?). I would have either brought the window in more to make its inclusion appear more deliberate, or excluded it altogether.
She looks to be slightly uncomfortable looking into the sun, but aren't we all?
My only other comment is that you're a lucky man!

It's doubtful that that return excuse can ever be used again. Too funny!
My thoughts exactly. A hilarious one-time event most likely but good for Apple. Heck if I was an exec there I'd send the guy one on my own dime (so it's not "Apple" doing it).

In other words, this attention-craving hacker decided to use a Mac to demonstrate an exploit that is far more threatening to a PC. The chances of a Macbook user a) buying a 3rd party wireless card and b) hooking it up to a Macbook are slim and none.
+++
Quoted for truth.
This is the key to this story, and I'm very disappointed in the media for completely missing this. The 3rd party peripheral being used was not secure, and *ANY* computer using this device could be compromised...even a Mac. But they really should point out that Mac's don't need these devices, so it's really a hypothetical demonstration.
Mac OS X has become the Everest of hacking challenges... these guys just took a helicopter to the top rather than climbing. But eventually, malware that affects OS X will start to create some issues... however, regardless of market-share, the design characteristics of OS X will keep malware from ever becoming the issue it is for Windows.
Cheers

I hate Walmart, I always have. they make people think they're so cheap. they really aren't cheap at all. they never have sales.
I wouldn't give a crap if walmart did anything to hurt the film studios. I don't buy movies there anyway because they actually check your ID if its R or unrated. not that I'm not old enough but I sure as hell hate taking my ID out to justify that I'm at least 17. they never have special editions or unrated versions so why the hell does it matter.
STICK TO BEST BUY OR CIRCUIT CITY.
BOYCOTT WALMART
It's appropriate to check identification for age, whether it's movies, music, or video games. What's wrong with doing the right thing?

I seriously doubt this is a major concern ATM for home users with secured wifi access points (and by that, I mean wifi APs that filter MAC addresses). In order for someone to use this exploit, they would undoubtedly have to be on your network..

That's not a poster, it's a big iPhone. They've got one in every store window. Different images scroll from bottom to top. Obviously this photo is in mid scroll.
BTW - All the iphones in iPhone commercials are very different than my iPhone. They show a small little photo of the person calling instead of a big full screen photo. Don't know why. It's the same in this ad.
ahhh..Gotcha..Duh.

As I've stated before, No Way does Apple realease the updated MBPs before the iPad is released!
Yes, I know that they are two different categories, but the MBPs would definitely steal a lot of the iPad's thunder.
I, too, would love to have the MBPs. Unfortunately, we are all just going to have to wait a while longer...

My wife said no too and this even includes my wish for one for my upcoming bday to get one.
Same boat. :( Birthday is Wednesday and all my hopes are gone. I just know I won't get one. If I'm REALLY lucky I'll get an AppleTV. But with the way things are going I'll most likely get an iCard.

No kidding. So much for the "everyone already owns all The Beatles songs they want" mantra. ;)
The iTunes stuff is very good quality. I went and bought several tunes that I didn't have from the re-mastered stuff.
lady bla bla has some talent. you have to have some to get admitted to juliard and NYU. even madonna had a good musical education before she hit the clubs in the 1980's
if you haven't seen this yet, it's lady bla bla a year or so before she hit it big
Ga ga seems to be more , much more, talented that Madonna though. Madonna = tone def.
The Beatles: Four guys who needed each other, because individually they were musical infants.
No, thanks.
The single worst summation of The Beatles. Ever. You don't deserve to hear them.
Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)
I thought no one cared...
I posted this on the Decemberists forum and it also got mixed reviews.
Although I have most of their stuff, from first CD's released in '87, I don't have all the re-masters recently issued. Like I said above it is nice to be able to click and shop if need be. ;)

While you're at it why not steal car if you can't pay for it? Or go to your local store and swipe an iPhone because you can't afford it? Sounds reasonable then I'm sure.
Also, while I'd love cheaper pricing, they are basing their pricing off of economic considerations from their home country and pricing their software accordingly. And it always cracks me to hear "no one will starve they makes lots of money!" well they have to in order to keep making new software!
see here is where your wrong, i'm not saying you should go and steel from the working class guy...i say take what you got coming...the way i see it, the only reason we can afford to buy a mac and software is because of the west exploiting today's poor country's...your entire world is build on theft in every meaning of the word, yet your to ignorant to see except you guys came up with a name for all the thievery and called it business overseas. Again this proves how ignorant/arrogant the west is, they just took whatever didn't belonged to them, they even took entire country's (does the word colonization mean something to you?) exploited the country's then left the people there to starve because the "civilized" western country's made it impossible for them to build an economy simply because the stripped the entire country of its riches...

Spent about an hour on the phone getting through to Apple. I too was having a problem with getting the web site to accept my batteries serial number. I was told that they were aware of the problem and to try later. I waited about two hours and tried again. This time the serial number went through fine. I suspect that matter is simply one of server overload.
There is no need to submit a bogus SN to get a replacement of a battery that is clearly within range. The only reason (if indeed it is a reason) to submit a bogus SN is one of greed.
Greed, i was entitled to a replacement battery........i did nothing wrong.....i am only getting what Apple and Sony owe me........

It's both sad and sickening to see how many Apple fanboys are elitists who only want Apple products to be sold at upscale stores. Such fanboys want Apple products to be regarded as high-end fashion accessories and status symbols. What a shame that Apple has such a feminized culture associated with it. I miss the days when Apple products were regarded as tools for accomplishing tasks.
Frankly, as pro-Apple as I am, I fully support the sale of this device at as many stores and outlets as possible. This device is truly for *everyone*: your 2 year-old ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pT4EbM7dCMs ), your grandma, the jet-set CEO, your brother, your sister, doctors, nurses, lawyers . . . everyone. It should get as much exposure as possible for how effing brilliant this device is and how well it works. It's a tool, a toy, you name it, it's whatever you want it to be, all rolled into one beautifully designed chassis.
As for "feminized culture" being associated with Apple products, I doubt it has anything to do with "elitism" per se. Apple tends to give technology a very "feminine" touch - meaning the products tend to have very curvy, attractive, almost sensual lines. These aren't button-festooned franken-devices with missile launchers bolted on. Attractive, minimalist design will always have some association with feminine sensibilities. This is normal.
